Job Description - Laboratory Manager

Objective

To develop and manage the Incubator Laboratories and provide support for user companies. To work with the rest of the Incubator Team to achieve its objectives in the area of biotechnology research commercialization.
Accountable to Director of Laboratory Services

Responsible for Laboratory Technician staff, all technical facilities, central laboratory operations and equipment and health and safety.

Working relationships

To assist the Director of Laboratory Services to build up and maintain effective and efficient relationships with all service providers and support organisations.

Key tasks

Laboratory Users

•To manage the daily running of the Laboratory facilities, maintaining: an environment conducive to good health and safety, and laboratory procedure, practices; equipment and facilities in good working order; service contracts on equipment and organizing repairs as required
•To maintain good relationships with private and public sector supporters of the Incubator
•To maintain good relationships with private sector users of the Incubator and its Laboratories
•To help seek further users of the facility
•With other members of the Incubator Team, seek to offer support to the users of the facility and network members
Staff
•Supervise and support Laboratory Technician staff.
Incubator Services
•Promote the Incubator’s services.
•Assist with projects for client companies in the Incubator as appropriate
•Carry out lab-based work for and with client companies
•Source and procure laboratory equipment, consumables and services
•Negotiate service contracts with equipment manufacturers and suppliers
•Have the ability to undertake first-line maintenance of equipment, including replacement of items such as bulbs and filters and second-line maintenance after manufacturer training, or with remote assistance by manufacturer
•Liaise as necessary on operational matters with the Director of Incubator Services

Core skills & Person Specification:

•Experienced laboratory manager with a background in biological sciences and wet laboratories
•Good to fluent English speaker, preferably Arabic speaking as well
•Good interpersonal skills, able to mix with and relate to tenants
•Good negotiating skills
•Very practical, can-do attitude
•Lateral thinker, problem solver
•Ability to run high levels of H&S through cooperation rather than being an enforcer
•Strong IT skills
•Keen to undertake further training, either on the job or external, including abroad

Experienced laboratory manager with a background in biological sciences and wet laboratories
The ability to meet deadlines, including production of reports to an agreed timetable

Ability to work as part of a team

Ability to follow and to give clear instructions

Have the ability to undertake first-line maintenance of equipment, including replacement of items such as bulbs and filters and second-line maintenance after manufacturer training, or with remote assistance by manufacturer
